PRESS RELEASE: 3 August 2018

St Francis Hospice Awareness Campaign

The one thing nobody wants to talk about is death. Whether it is your own or someone else’s, it remains a taboo topic.

“We recently heard the heart-wrenching story of a lady whose nanny was sent home from a hospital with the words; ‘Go visit Hospice, they will help you.’ The poor lady was under the impression that she was being sent to a place which would cure her: she had no idea that she was in the terminal phase of her illness. We want to limit incidents of this nature through education on the value of timely Hospice referral,” Lynn van Vuuren, Events Manager at St Francis Hospice said. In the words of a newly-acquired supporter: “I didn’t truly know what Hospice did until I needed them. I am so grateful that my nanny now has professionals to care for her in the comfort of her own home.”

St Francis Hospice specialises in offering comprehensive home-based palliative care to patients in the final stages of a terminal disease at no charge to them. The service extends from monitoring pain, symptom & comfort levels, counselling and ensuring social issues are in order to grief/bereavement support for family members.

Hospice is again on an awareness campaign to alert the public to the services it provides to those suffering from Cancer, HIV&AIDS and Motor Neurone Disease.

A group of volunteer students will, during August, distribute informative brochures, kindly sponsored by A & S Printers, in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa to Provincial, Dora Nginza, Livingstone, Mercantile and Uitenhage Hospitals as well as to the Walmer and Motherwell primary health care clinics.

As part of ongoing fundraising initiatives to sustain the service, the annual Ladies Champagne Breakfast, sponsored by Klinicare Pharmacies, is being held at Pine Lodge on 8 September with ‘Michael Bublé and Adele’ from Centrestage as the morning’s main entertainment. Tickets, at R 175 per head, are available from Lynn van Vuuren & Nicky Von Hoffmann on 041 360 7070.

Please contact Hospice if you wish to volunteer, make a donation, attend an event or become a Hospice Hero by committing to a monthly contribution via debit order.
